  • Couple

Sauna in the room Lovely view from the bedroom

Decor a little tired in Le Jardin room & bathroom Decking area very tired & hot tub didn't feel private as another resident decided to have a mobile phone conversation right next to the trellised fence while my husband & I were in it.

  • Couple

We stayed in the Russian suite , there was plenty of room ,and the room was pleasantly decorated . The staff were pleasant and helpful , the location very good , and breakfast was very good . Ejoyed our nights stay greatly .

    The floor boards squeaked

  • Older travelers

Liked the location, friendly atmosphere, room very comfortable.

Not being Told the room we booked was on the ground floor and next to the pavement, it was noisy and disturbed our sleep. The bath , the spa did,nt work.we asked for an early morning call and did,nt get it. We would have preferred a buffet breakfast.

  • Family with children

The staff is friendly and helpful.

The room was over-heated and it is not very easy to figure how to open the windows in the middle of the night.

  • Couple

The room was fantastic (we stayed in the Library), beautifully furnished, a huge bathroom featuring a corner bath with air bubbles. We ate at the Gatz Grill - the restaurant in the hotel and the food was excellent, the best 3 course meal I have had in a long time. I would highly recommend this hotel for a special occassion and will definitely be going back.

  • Couple

Good location. Design in the Library was enjoyable, with good size bathroom.

Library room is on ground floor directly onto the street and so has some traffic/pedestrian noise. The breakfast choice and quality was significantly poorer than similar priced establishments.

  • Couple

Breakfast was good and the location is central for the amenities and sites of Durham. The bed was comfortable. Staff were helpful.

The room was tired and in need of refurbishment. Not all the facilities of the shower cubicle were working and there were no instructions. In summary, the room was ok but there was no 'wow' factor.

  • Group of friends

Lovely style and comfort, big bathroom, high quality linen and toiletries, great food.

Could be noisy at weekends (I was staying midweek) as it is on a busy road with a lot of foot traffic as well as cars, into the night.

  • Older travelers

The themes of the rooms are quirky and fun

Unfortunately during our stay, there was a water leak from the room above which cascaded down through the ceiling of our room, soaking some of our clothes. We were moved to another room. On checking out the next day there was no apologies from the managment for the inconvenience, not until I asked did they take £20 off my Dinner bill

  • Couple

All of it, thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!! We are already looking at visiting again just to stay at the hotel.

The only thing we could fault was the selection on the menu wasn't very broad, however there was still something we could eat and the food itself was very good.

  • Older travelers

A unique hotel with themed rooms, in an excellent location to enjoy the historic city of Durham. All fixtures and fittings of a very high standard, with quality toiletries, linen, towels etc. Clean, tasteful and intriguingly decorated. Friendly efficient check in, though on telephone enquiry night before, was adviced the hotel was full, hence use of Good parking available, but remember to buy a ticket, charges commence 8am to 6pm.

The cruise room was noisy, we initially thought it part of the effect....the engine room of a is in fact the extraction fans adjacent to the bedroom window, running intermittently all night. We've stayed before, the library is delightful, don't be put off by this one room. The hotel has an historic reputation for excellence, new owner took over two months ago - friendly and keen, but the focus has changed, we got the feeling it is now being aimed at the 'hip' new market of Restaurant with Rooms - marketing needs to be clear. Breakfast was not a positive experience. Main dinner menu focuses on 'grills' it was fine but didn't feel it returned value for money.

  • Older travelers

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast excellent. Very close to the centre. Lots of pubs and restaurants nearby. Very good Thai restaurant around the corner.

The room we stayed in, being the Cruise Room, was very expensive for it's size. There was also no lift for taking the bags up to the room (we had to get to third floor). Also window slightly above the adjacent wall ventilation for what I assume was the kitchen. On the first night it woke us up at 2.30am. It was some time before we went back to sleep. When I spoke with reception in the morning it did not happen for rest of the stay.

  • Couple

Lots of places to visit very friendly people lots of places to eat out at overall a lovely weekend.

  • Older travelers

Well located unique boutique hotel. Themed rooms decorated to a high standard and a top quality breakfast.

  • Older travelers

The breakfast and the staff were excellent.

We were not given the room that was confirmed on the booking with Instead of the Library we had been expecting from our confirmation from, we were put in the Bijoux Loft which was obviously a smaller and cheaper room.
